Broomfield Voters:
If Question 2B Passes…
Why no on question 2B?
the broomfield city council is prioritizing increasing their term limits from two terms to three terms, focusing on themselves over other pressing city and county needs.
The Broomfield Charter Review Committee included two dually-elected Councilmembers who actively influenced recommendations from the committee. One recommendation is to change Broomfield’s Charter to define the number of terms that Councilmembers can be in office and at the same time set it to three four-year terms.
While the Charter Review Committee made the recommendation, the Committee also noted that this was not a priority to update in Broomfield’s Charter. Yet, the Broomfield City Council, on a split controversial 6-4 vote, approved the question for the 2024 ballot and did so ahead of the other ballot measures they approved.
Why? Because the current City Council is fixated on increasing the length of time they can be in office AND increasing their pay to become full-time, full-paid representatives. Their end goal is to turn the Broomfield Council into a political career-path while making a living off of the taxpayers for up to 12 years.
Broomfield’s history has been well served by citizen councilmembers focused on what Broomfield needs, NOT on their own political aspirations or desires. Question 2B needlessly increases council term limits and will prioritize councilmembers as career of politicians instead of councilmembers that truly represent their neighbors and fellow citizens.
Protect your vote. Vote no on Question 2B.
What is question 2B (term limits)?
“Shall Section 4.3 of the Broomfield Home Rule Charter be amended to limit a mayor and limit a councilmember to no more than three consecutive terms of office, provided the voters of Broomfield choose to reelect that person?”
______ Yes/For ______ No/Against
If Question 2B passes, what language will Change in the broomfield charter?
Question 2B was sent to the November 2024 ballot when the Broomfield Council passed Ordinance 2243 on July 9 2024 (First Reading, Item 7D) and August 13 2024 (Second Reading, Item 7B).
If passed by Broomfield voters in November, Question 2B will add a new item defining and increasing term limits to Chapter IV (Council and Mayor) Section 4.3 (Terms of Office - Mayor and Councilmembers) of the Broomfield Charter. Question 2B would increase the number of terms that Broomfield Councilmembers could serve from two 4-year terms (or 8 years), as defined in the Colorado Constitution, to three 4-year terms (or 12 years) under the Broomfield Charter.
The language to be added to Chapter IV (Council and Mayor) Section 4.3 (Terms of Office - Mayor and Councilmembers) is provided below.
Chapter IV (Council and Mayor) Section 4.3 (Terms of Office - Mayor and Councilmembers) - Item (c)
No Mayor or Councilmember shall serve more than three consecutive partial or full terms in office. For the purpose of this Section 4.3, the offices of mayor and councilmember are different offices, a partial term means at least 50% of the regular term, and terms are considered consecutive unless they are at least four years apart.
